All About Dentures

If you’re someone that is considering dentures as a tooth replacement, you should obviously do your research on that. So what are dentures? What can they do for your oral health? Well, you’re about to find out. The answers are right here, and you just have to read on to find out.

Now, to begin, you should learn what dentures are. They are in essence, artificial teeth and gums that you can get from any dentist, including your Eugene dentist, in order to replace lost or teeth that were removed or extracted. They can be full or partial, meaning they only replace a few, or replace all of them. Regardless of what you get, you can get custom dentures, and they actually will match your teeth.

Now, what are they made out of? Well, in the past they were made of porcelain or plastic, but in today’s dentistry, they’re made out of a type of hard resin. The materials used to make these are typically more fragile than teeth, so if you’re not up to caring for them, you should consider something else, since they can break down quicker than natural teeth, and they have to be replaced every five years. The supporting structure of this also holds the artificial teeth in the location that they should be, which in turn resembles the natural gum line, and it’s made of either a similar resin, or a more flexible polymer that fits tightly to the natural gum line.

Now, why in the world would you wear these? Well, they will help the appearance of a smile that has a lot of missing teeth, but it also helps to keep the structure of the mouth complete by keeping the cheeks and lips supported. It also allows you to eat foods that do require chewing, so you can have a good diet. They are also a viable solution to replace teeth that are causing pain, along with those that are causing oral health issues, especially in the case of rotted roots or damage. Having dentures that are fitted also means less troublesome teeth can be taken out, all with helping out your smile.

Now partial dentures are used to only replace some of the teeth when you have some of the natural ones still, but they aren’t strong enough to hold support structures such as bridges, also in the circumstances when you have one or two teeth that are missing, but not the whole mouth.

Typically partial dentures are fitted to the gum line that they’ll sit on, and they fasten to the natural teeth so that they don’t fall out of place. They are not permanently fastened however and they can be taken out for cleaning, and while you sleep. In contrast, full dentures will replace all of the natural teeth. You can have them for the top or bottom, and they’re held in place by a suction function and an oral adhesive, allowing them to be removable.

There are some various types of dentures that are different from the permanent ones as well called the immediate dentures. These are created before the teeth that are being replaced with the dentures have been removed and used after the root extraction. This will allow the area to heal. These can be refitted into permanent dentures as well to accommodate changes in the gums and swelling as the jaw heals. Immediate dentures are often disposed of once the healing process is done. You can also get overdentures if the traditional method is uncomfortable, or if you don’t have a few natural teeth left. These are fitted over the roots of the teeth and these rest on these or implants. This is easy and able to be removed for cleaning, so it’s pretty cool.

Dentures are the cheaper option for tooth replacement, and it’s one that you should consider if you do need it. If you want more information, talk to your Eugene dentist for further information, since they can often point you into other directions and tell you a bit more about the process as well, allowing you to have a good idea on what you need to get to have the best health.
